RTCC ELA Course Descriptions

Communication & Literature

This course focuses on the core concepts of English Language Arts–reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening–and applies them in both academic and professional formats. Students will develop and practice communication skills that connect to their RTCC programs, to their college and career paths, and to their lives beyond. Writing projects range from professional communications to academic essays to creative writing. Reading formats range from literature and non-fiction to technical materials.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Apply close reading strategies to understand, interpret, and analyze a variety of literary and informational texts
  • Summarize texts to identify central ideas or themes and key supporting details
  • Analyze the structure of texts and identify how specific parts relate to the whole and how purpose and point of view impact the style and content of the text
  • Compose clear and coherent writing for a variety of purposes, using effective  organization and appropriate style
  • Use a complete writing process to develop and strengthen writing through planning, revising, editing, rewriting, and varying approach
  • Conduct research to gather relevant information and evidence, determine the reliability of sources, and incorporate research into your own writing
  • Collaborate professionally with a range of partners and participate effectively in conversations with diverse perspectives
  • Present information clearly and effectively for a broad range of audiences using a variety of mediums
  • Demonstrate understanding of the conventions of English grammar, usage, and mechanics
  • Use academic and domain-specific vocabulary effectively and precisely.
  • Adapt language use to fit the audience, purpose, and context
     

Pre-Tech English Language Arts
