Criminal Justice & Public Safety at RTCC
The Criminal Justice & Public Safety program prepares students for careers in law enforcement, emergency services, and other public safety professions. Students learn through real-world scenarios, hands-on training, and professional certifications that provide an edge in today’s competitive workforce.
A key feature of the program is our Drones in Public Safety initiative. Students gain flight experience with advanced drone technology and learn how unmanned aircraft are transforming modern public safety through crime scene documentation, accident reconstruction, search and rescue, fire detection, and disaster response. Students will gain proficiency in a variety of cutting edge drones with mapping and thermal capabilities. This high-demand skillset prepares graduates for immediate employment and further education.
Students leave RTCC with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue careers in policing, corrections, firefighting, EMS, dispatching, or search and rescue—or to continue their studies in criminal justice and public safety fields at the college level.

“Between 2021 and 2023, drone-related job postings surged over 200%, reflecting rapid demand in the field. Meanwhile, the global public safety drone market is projected to grow at an annual rate of about 13%, reaching nearly $2.0 billion by 2028. This growth underscores how drones are becoming indispensable in operations like search and rescue, crime scene documentation, fire surveillance, and disaster response. Students can earn up to six college credits at any Vermont State College by taking courses such as Intro to Criminal Justice and Intro to Psychology.
